Queridas familias de dragones,
We have spent some beautiful days at Finca las Piedras, a research and education center located one hour north of the city of Puerto Maldonado in the Peruvian Amazon. At La Finca, we have done many interesting activities such as walking in the middle of the Amazon while the researchers explained to us about flora and fauna of the place, talks about the rainforest ecosystems, night walks to listen to the sounds of the mammals and birds, and help setting camera traps to record “rare” animals such as jaguars. We even had the opportunity to play volleyball against the researchers.
After several days at La Finca, we are now staying at the Tambopata hostel in the city of Puerto Maldonado. Tomorrow we will leave, at 10 a.m., to a beautiful place known as Hacienda Herrera. This eco-lodge was built by a young family who is very passionate about promoting forest conservation through responsible and eco-friendly tourism. Here, we will learn about sustainable lifestyles and deepen our knowledge about the Amazon. Also, during our time in Hacienda Herrera, we will learn about amazonian organic agroforestry and appreciate different plantations of tropical cultures.
We will also take advantage of this calm and beautiful space surrounded by the majestic Madre de Dios River to sit down and meaningfully reflect on our trip and the experiences we have lived throughout the weeks we have shared together.
Finca Herrera is the last place we will visit, marking the end of our trip. It’s sad, we know! However, even though it is our last destination on this group trip, we hope it will be one of the first in a long line of transformative journeys that our Dragoncitxs (little dragons) will soon undertake.
With much affection,
