Independent Study Projects

Dear new friends,

Independent Study Projects (ISPs) are an important part of every Dragons course. They are an opportunity for you to get hands-on experience in different topics that you are particularly interested in. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to do our ISPs in the ancient city of Patan, where many traditional arts and crafts are still alive and thriving today. During our urban homestay, you will get to choose a topic to learn from an expert mentor, some of whom come from families that have been practicing their art form for centuries! Learning with a mentor will give you a wonderful perspective on the value of these skills and the integral part they play in life in Nepal, and particularly in Patan.

This list includes many great topics that have been hits in the past:

  • Woodcarving
  • Silver jewelry making
  • Metal carving
  • Stone carving
  • Paubha painting (Newari style Buddhist painting)
  • Ayurvedic medicine
  • Astrology
  • Yoga and philosophy
  • Tailoring
  • Cooking
  • Traditional dance
  • Musical instruments: tabla, flute, sarangi, madal
  • Written Nepali / Devanagari script

Start thinking about what you might want to choose now! We will have more detailed discussions about each topic and what they entail when we all meet here in Nepal. Hopefully after strolling through the streets of Bhaktapur and Patan, you will be able to find that which inspires you most.

See you soon!
