¡Hola! My name is Rachel Carignan, I’m a senior at MDIHS and I moved here from Portland, Maine when I was 12 years old! I love to travel and was blessed with a family that is capable of visiting new places. I first left the country when I was 13 years old and I went to England and Scottland, I then traveled to Israel for an educational summer program when I started high school. I love experiencing new cultures and becoming immersed in the people that surround me.
The quote I picked from “Why We Travel” by Pico Iyer is:
“Travel is the best way of rescuing the humanity of places, and saving them from abstraction and ideology”
I picked this quote because I think that it really speaks to what it means to travel when you’re going somewhere you’ve never been before. I believe that you can learn the history of a place and try to figure out how a country runs and how they live, but reading and learning about a country is not the same as actually being from a country that has experienced turmoil in the past. I think that some people romanticize cultures and countries, however no matter where you go, people are people and they should always be treated with no expectations of who they are “supposed” to be based off of the research that you have done on their country and their people beforehand.
During this trip, I hope to bring leadership to this group, and the ability to know when to step up and help the group but also when to step back and let someone else lead. I believe that I am very passionate when it comes to things that are important to me, and to the things that those that are closest to me find important as well. I will also try my hardest to help those around me and put others needs before my own.
