We have arrived in Rumtek

Yesterday morning the students said their final goodbyes to their homestay families and as a group we loaded into jeeps, crossed the border from West Bengal to Sikkim, finally arriving to Rumtek monastery where we will be doing our Buddhist retreat.

For the next few days we will be meeting with lamas and khempos to learn more about Buddhism, practice different types of meditation, and tomorrow we are doing a silent day!

Here are a few photos from the past few days including the farewell party we hosted for our homestay families, and a meeting with the elder leader of the Lepcha Development Board. The Lepcha are one of the indigenous groups in this region, and efforts are in place to preserve the culture and language. To meet with him was quite an honor!
