I normally don’t believe in ‘magic’ or whatever you want to call it, but I swear I felt something at the Rumtek monastery. When the world’s nicest man, the monk Karma let us into the backroom of the Golden Stupa, a place where monks and tourists alike only see through thick glass, it was undeniable that there was a feeling of power and positive energy. When I held the string that ran through the grated door of the ornate gold chest positioned in the rooms center, into the heart of the 16th Karmapa and made one wish, I struggled to hold back tears. I have no explanation to what I felt or why the Khempo who we had classes with radiated calmness and importance. I can’t explain why every dream I had at the monastery was so intense, memorable, and vivid. I thought I was going crazy but almost everyone on the program agrees. I don’t know if I would call myself a believer now, and reincarnation still seems a little far fetched, but truthfully I can’t deny that there was something magical at that monastery.
