Important Update: Volcanic Activity in Guatemala

Dear Guatemala Summer students and families,

As you may already be aware, the Fuego Volcano in Guatemala has been erupting over the past 24 hours, tragically causing fatalities in villages located on the slopes and immediate vicinity of the volcano. The Fuego Volcano is located 25 miles south-west of the capital of Guatemala City, and has been putting out lava, ash, and smoke on a fairly regular basis for years. Our staff on the ground report that the volcanic activity is steadily decreasing, and fortunately none of the communities that we work with have been directly impacted by the eruption. We currently have a student group in Guatemala and they have been unaffected by the volcanic activity.

Guatemala is a country with significant volcanic activity and Fuego is one of the most active volcanoes in the region. Our hearts go out to the communities affected. We have been monitoring this closely and considering the impacts on our upcoming courses and on our partner communities. We do not anticipate that this eruption will affect our upcoming courses or create any increased risk to our programming. None of the locations that our summer programs plan to visit have been impacted by this volcanic activity. The cities of Antigua and Guatemala City have experienced ash covering, but no damage or injury, and government agencies have no plans for evacuations outside of the communities most immediately surrounding the volcano.

We have an extensive network in Guatemala from 15 years of programming there and plan to avoid any areas which have active risk from volcanic activity, including the Fuego volcano. We will continue to monitor this situation and be in touch with any changes or important updates, but at this time, we do not anticipate that this recent eruption will affect any of our summer programs in Guatemala.

Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with us if you have questions.

Best wishes,

Julianne and the Dragons Administration
