My name is Caleb Gabriel-Deveau, I live in a little town called Warren located in the northwest corner of Connecticut. I will be going into junior year at The Marvelwood School, located in Kent, Connecticut. I have just recently started learning Mandarin, my school and previous school did not offer a Mandarin class, only Spanish and French. So, doing what I thought would be good, I took Spanish. I took three years of those classes and wasn’t that interested. So, when I got to my new school, I noticed a large population of Chinese students, I knew what language they spoke, but I had no idea about what they were talking about, so I wanted to learn and know. I started talking to one of the Chinese students and he started to teach me a few words. I started to then, talk to some of the other students and they were helping me with pronunciation. After, I started teaching myself using Rosetta Stone, Memrise, Duolingo.
I have never really traveled to many places especially outside of the U.S so this you could say, will be my first time truly outside of the country. I am looking to try new things like food, traditions, etc. When I was reading the Yak Board, I saw we will all have the opportunity to do an Independent Study Project, I am very excited to try new things like Kung Fu, Calligraphy and more. When I told my Chinese friends I was going they were all super excited and wanted to know what I was doing. I have friends from, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shenzhen, etc. They tell me all about the things I will see and I am very excited to do so with all of you.
Other that, I love sports such as soccer. I play for the varsity team at my school. I also wrestle. A very hard and intensive sport which this year we won the championship along with the lacrosse championship. I have a twin brother and two more after that. My twin and I will be turning 16 two days after this is up. I am hoping this trip will be great for all of us and I can’t wait to meet you all at LAX.
