What’s up friends
I am Asher Freund. I live about half an hour north of San Francisco. I am 17 and a rising senior. I read a lot. I also write for fun. Two of my favorite novels are ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ and ‘Franny and Zooey’ by JD Salinger. I really appreciate the writing of Charles Eisenstein, especially his manifesto The More Beautiful World our Hearts Know is Possible. I have two moms, who separated when I was 4. My bio mom and stephom live in a tiny town in the forest where I spend most of my time. My other mom lives in the city of Oakland, and some of my best friends live in San Francisco. I end up spending a good deal of time in the city. I love nature, but I appreciate the beauty of urban spaces. I play violin in a rock band with some friends. Music is an integral part of me. I listen to a lot of contemporary and 90’s indie rock, like radiohead, modest mouse, king krule, bjork, and sufjan stevens. I am sad that we won’t be listening to music in Peru, but hopefully we’ll make some music!
I recently bought a Peruvian smoothie called ‘Lucuma’ from a hip cafe in town. It tasted like a piece of the earth. In middle school, I became obsessed with mountains for some reason, and I started researching the Andes. I learned that the Andes are the most biologically diverse mountain range, and that the Peruvian Andes contain some of the most mystical and awesome natural wonders in the world. I have also been fascinated by the Inca every since the first time I saw a picture of Machu Picchu. I can’t wait to see the Andes with you all. I have a general connection to South America because my biological father, whom I’ve never met, is Argentine.
Like the universe, home for me is in a constant state of change. I think home is transience itself. I do not believe in God in a religious way, but I do behold the reality of perpetual change with the same reverence that religious people might behold God. When I am at peace with impermanence, I am home.
I can’t wait to meet you all tomorrow 😉
PS that photo is of me and my cat, Sassy. I will miss her quite a bit.
