Introducing Luke Hein

Hi Norfolk students, teachers, and families!

My name is Luke Hein. I’m one of the Dragons instructors who will help you make your upcoming journey a deep, meaningful, and fun experience.

This will be my tenth course with Dragons since I joined in 2014. Over the past four years I’ve had the privilege of working with talented instructors, guiding curious students, and interacting with scores of homestay families in cities and villages all over China and, more recently, all over Indonesia, too. I’m grateful to be on this path, and I’m excited to take the next step on it with all of you.

I first traveled to China for my senior year of high school and was hooked straightaway. I returned to work with a Chinese guiding company in Lijiang, one of the locations we’ll visit on the upcoming trip. In 2008 I spent six months in Beijing researching how the Olympics was affecting the huge number of migrant laborers responsible for building the Olympic venues and transforming Beijing. In 2013, I spent some time teaching English in Chengdu and enjoying the fun dialect and spicy food there.

So that’s my background in China. I have grown to love this country and also to use it as a lens through which I explore the topics of identity, religion, rural development, tourism, the legacy of history, and many other important topics.

I look forward to getting to know you all better and using my experience to enhance your explorations into this fascinating place.

Please feel free to post questions, introductions, or thoughts on the upcoming trip on the Yak board. In the coming weeks we’ll try to use this board more, and once we’re in China, it will be a great place for you to share pictures and meditations and for your friends and family to live vicariously through you.
