A Few Logistical Answers

Thanks for kicking it off with such great questions Tamara! To provide (some) answers:

1. Are kindles permitted?–In the next few days we will post a yak that will cover the Electronics policy while on course. Stay tuned!

2. Some notes on medications–First, we aren’t doctors and so you should talk to a travel doctor and get their recommendation! Some students (and instructors) choose to carry their own antibiotic on course, others don’t. It is up to a combination of students, parents and their doctor to make that decision.

Also, a few general medication reminders. We travel with a fully stocked medical kit that includes a variety of over the counter medicines (Ibuprofen, cold and flu medicine, pepto bismol, cough drops, etc), as well as some broad-spectrum antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin. But if you are especially prone to motion sickness, headaches, or menstrual cramps, it’s a good idea to bring some of your own.

Please remember that instructors will collect and review all medications at the start of the course and may hold on
to certain prescription medications for the duration of the course.

3. Money on course–Our recommendation is that students carry no more than $200 in cash (for gifts, expensive Western snacks etc). Just to be clear, this is an estimate based on student feedback from similar courses. We’ve also had students spend almost nothing, it depends on what you want. We recommended cash because ATMs in Bhutan are not reliable. A lot of the times they don’t have cash in them or are non-existent, and using credit cards is not common either. So you need enough cash to sustain your purchasing for the month; assume you won’t be able to find a working ATM in Bhutan.

However, we do recommend that you bring a debit card or credit card for emergencies. These rarely get used but are often the best way to pay for any medical expenses that occur on course.

4. Visas–We will soon be posting a separate yak with information about visas.
