Newari Food

During our time in Patan, our group has been staying with Newari families. The Newaris are an ethnic group, and they are traditionally artisans. Many of our homestay parents are jewelry makers, bronze casters, or painters. My homestay dad (and ISP mentor) is a woodcarver. The Newaris also have a distinct cuisine. Every so often, my family has a Newari meal for dinner. It usually consists of beaten rice (called baji in Newari), a lentil pancake (called bara), and a fried egg. There is also always buffalo meat in various forms, from jelly to fried lung. The opportunity to get a taste of a new subculture in Nepal has been a great addition to my time in the city.
