Situation in Rakhine State (Plight of Rohingya)

Dear friends, families and participants on the Myanmar semester,

We have understandably received quite a few emails and calls asking about safety and security in Myanmar in lieu of recent incidents between the Rohingya and Burmese military. I’m presently with the Myanmar instructor team running a staff training and we are keeping a close eye on the events. We’re receiving information both from government contacts and our collaborators on the ground. Sadly, the conflict is age-old, tracing its origins to an era long before the colonial period — which is to say that it’s well-known and has been on our radar for several years.

We will continue to monitor the situation, as we do with all restive areas near where we travel, and be prepared to modify our itinerary should anything significant arise. But please rest assured, we will not travel near the Rakhine State, nor do we expect any negative impacts from the events in the far southwest. The plight of the Rohingya is an aspect we’ll focus on from a socio-political perspective, and that’s about it.

All the best,
